CSS Layout Grid Articles & TUtorials

CSS Layout Grids Approach articles, tutorials, tips, advice, and lessons. All of the resources will help you to create the structure for CSS-based designs. None of these resources are templates that attempt to replace the need for a design; rather, they all aim to simplify the process by creating a skeleton that you will build upon.
Without these online generators, designers have to waste extra effords to do repeat jobs. Since we had shared about CSS Frameworks last week, i would like to extend the topic by sharing some useful CSS grid layout generator.

While CSS may offer many advantages and gives the developer very high level of control of the layout it is still quite hard to implement complex designs correctly and fast from bottom up and without having experience and good tool support. This is where this article comes in handy and provides you with the tools and tutorials needed. Lets start with an overview of the Grid Systems available.

A page element with relative positioning gives you the control to absolutely position children elements inside of it. To some, this is obvious. To others, this may be one of those CSS ?Ah-ha!? Moments. I remember it being a big deal for me when I first got it.

WP_Query is a powerful tool to control what comes out of your loop. Today Im going to teach you all how to use it to make a 3 columned newspaper theme that has all your main blog posts in the main column, and off to the side a set of posts with a certain category. Well be using the 960 CSS framework for the basic layout and reset of our theme, it will chop a lot of work off whats needed!

So the focus is usually on the horizontal layout, which usually means columns. (Incidentally, if you?re ever wondering why fixed layouts are so popular amongst designers, this has a lot to do with it ? it?s awfully difficult to build any coherent form of grid when you lose control of proportions in both dimensions at once.)

In this tutorial I?ll show you how to mock up a fresh looking blog theme in Photoshop that is designed to be used within the 960 framework. This tutorial was designed more for web design theory than Photoshop technique. It is for that reason that I don?t go into great depth on each Photoshop step, but spend considerably more time on design theory and application. Photoshop beginners may find it somewhat tricky to follow along. Let?s get started.

I?ve decided that I?m going to write a little something up for those people interested in grids. I?m going to walk you through the process of creating a grid for a Flash based site that will work for screen resolutions of 1024x768 and up. The beauty of creating a grid for Flash is that you can create a fixed grid and don?t have to be concerned with the user changing type sizes and screwing up the entire grid of the site. The only time you have to be concerned with a fixed grid is if you build a Flash site where the contents of the site repositions based on the size of the browser window, in which case you would have to figure out a fluid grid which is something I haven?t done yet but plan to do in the future.

Just a few months ago when I created any design, I didn?t practice a grid system. I didn?t know much about it so I thought that I can live without it. Yes it?s true. You can live without a grid system, but should you? Why is the grid important? I will try to answer to all of your questions in this article.

The Golden Section, Golden Ratio, and the grandiose Divine Proportion are all names for the same thing; a ratio of 1.618. Nodding off? Not yet? Good! Bear with me. Here?s the maths: the Golden Ratio is the ratio between two segments so that the ratio between point ac/bc is 1.618.

The third installment to this series is going to be a little different. The previous installments have been talking through some of the basics of grid construction using ratios as the primary device. Theyve also dealt with grid construction for print media. Unfortunately, as designers for web media, we dont have some of the luxuries as our print designer colleagues. Rather than go through tutorials (Ill be covering these in the last two installments), Ill be using this installment as a platform to discuss some of the challenges and rewards of designing grid systems for the web.

For the purposes of this article, Im going to be focussing on the theory of creating the grid rather than the implementation. I did mention in the last series that I would cover implementation using CSS, well Im not going to. There are just so many resources and books available telling you how to create the CSS layouts you need?Ill touch on it, but I wont be going into too much detail.

Flexible vs Fixed. Which one to choose? Why choose one over the other? Well you wont find the answers to those questions here. What Im aiming to do with this article is to investigate how the theory of grid design can be applied to a flexible web page.

When you make fairly liberal use of illustrations in your posts, you essentially wed yourself to the particulars of the CSS you?ve established, creating graphics of a certain width or ordering content in a particular method. It works in the short term, but it presents problems when you sit down to redesign.

Since tables were co-opted for layout purposes, columns have become key to many Web design layouts, and this thinking continued when CSS took over from tables (at least in the minds of savvy designers) for Web-page presentation. However, other fields of layout design don?t think in arbitrary columns, they work with grids, and these form the basis for the structure of page designs. This article will provide the lowdown on grid design for Web pages.

One of the concepts in web design I like most is the grid, gridified design. Popularized by Grid-Posterboy Khoi Vinh the beauty of the grid finds its way every day more in modern web design. There are numerous examples of great grid design. Recently a grid CSS framework was released and many designers offer tools, aids to simplify grid design.

Designers of all types (web, print, etc.) are constantly facing issues involving the structure of their designs. Web designers are increasingly turning to grids to control the structure of web pages, and grids have long been used extensively in other design mediums. For many designers, grid-based design is still somewhat of a mystery. In this article we?ll take a look at some of the basics of grid-based design so that you can understand it and apply it to your projects.

After creating a well-structured and usable grid, consider allowing it to breath. A page without a grid is a usability nightmare. On the other hand, a grid that has creatively overlapping, escaping, or energizing columns leads to a more enjoyable user experience. Discovering or planning areas of the design that will have some freedom will lead to more interesting and appealing design solutions.

Seems pretty obvious. The best way to see if something lines up is to put a ruler up to it and check. None of this eyeballing stuff. Do you think Norm Abram goes around eyeballing measurements when he is rocking out some amazing kitchen counter installation. No. But you also wouldn?t catch ol? Norm using a metal ruler up on his shiny new monitor either. Nope, we?re going to need a digital ruler of sorts.

What do houses and well designed pages have in common? They are both built on a framework?a carefully measured, solid structure that forms a foundation on which to build. A grid is a combination of non-printing margins, columns, and guides used as the underlying framework of a page. Though any type of document can incorporate a grid, it is long, detailed documents such as magazines, newsletters, newspapers, and books that virtually require them.

Before deciding when, why, and how to use a grid you need to know the elements of the grid and how to create it. While it is invisible in the final printed piece, youll need to be able to see it during page construction.

On each page layout grid, youll want to decide placements for main content, branding or logo, page title, global and local navigation elements, copyright or contact information, etc. For example, a page for a generic web design class might begin with a layout grid something like

Believe it or not, underlying every page of TheOnion.com are sixteen columns of 42 pixels each, separated by fifteen gutters (the empty white space between) of 10 pixels each, plus an additional, outsized column for the left-hand navigation. It?s an almost absurd number, I know, but it has a real purpose, because these pages are sufficiently complex that the practice of laying out elements on them requires lots of guidance.

Made popular by the International Typographic Style movement and pioneered by legends like Josef M?ller-Brockmann and Wim Crouwel, the grid is the foundation of any solid design. The Grid System is an ever-growing resource where graphic designers can learn about grid systems, the golden ratio and baseline grids.

Flying into my home city of Tucson, Arizona late one night in November, I was impressed by how rigid a grid the city?s layout is. Tucson is one of America?s planned cities, and from the sky, it?s easy to see that Tucson?s designers succeeded in creating a city in which everything is laid out according to a precise plan.
