jGRASP is a lightweight development environment, created specifically to provide automatic generation of software visualizations to improve the comprehensibility of software. jGRASP is implemented in Java, and runs on all platforms with a Java Virtual Machine (Java version 1.5 or higher). jGRASP produces Control Structure Diagrams (CSDs) for Java, C, C++, Objective-C, Ada, and VHDL; Complexity Profile Graphs (CPGs) for Java and Ada; UML class diagrams for Java; and has dynamic object viewers that work in conjunction with an integrated debugger and workbench for Java. The KDevelop-Project was founded in 1998 to build up an easy to use IDE (Integrated Development Environment) for KDE. Since then, the KDevelop IDE is publicly available under the GPL and supports many programming languages.

Kommander is a two part application. The first part is the editor where you visually build dialogs and applications and edit the scripted elements. The second part is the executor which processes the generated XML file. Kommander is a non traditional disruptive technology. It does not compile applications, but it does not rely on interpreted scripting to build its interface. It relies wherever possible on compiled functions. It produces non-compliled dialogs and applications at a very small file size that run fast and can be distributed without binary compatibility issues.

RHIDE is an IDE (integrated development environment). It is NOT a compiler. With RHIDE you can develop and debug your applications written in C, C++, Pascal and other languages for which you have a compiler which can be called from RHIDE.

Scintilla is a free source code editing component. It comes with complete source code and a license that permits use in any free project or commercial product. As well as features found in standard text editing components, Scintilla includes features especially useful when editing and debugging source code. These include support for syntax styling, error indicators, code completion and call tips. The selection margin can contain markers like those used in debuggers to indicate breakpoints and the current line. Styling choices are more open than with many editors, allowing the use of proportional fonts, bold and italics, multiple foreground and background colours and multiple fonts. Development of Scintilla started as an effort to improve the text editor in PythonWin. After being frustrated by problems in the Richedit control used by PythonWin, it looked like the best way forward was to write a new edit control. The biggest problem with Richedit and other similar controls is that they treat styling changes as important persistent changes to the document so they are saved into the undo stack and set the documents dirty flag. For source code, styling should not be persisted as it can be mechanically recreated.

SharpDevelop is a free IDE for C#, VB.NET and Boo projects on Microsofts .NET platform. It is open-source, and you can download both sourcecode and executables from this site. In addition, you can find the latest information and changes on #develop, as well as get in touch with the team in the forum.

Smultron is a free text editor for Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 which is both easy to use and powerful. It is designed to neither confuse newcomers nor disappoint advanced users. It should work perfectly for a whole variety of needs - like web programming, script editing, making a to do list and so on. Smultron has all open documents in a list with beautiful Quick Look icons to your left just like e.g. iTunes so you can easily switch between many documents - you can also choose to display them as tabs if you prefer it that way. It is easy to program with Smultron as it colours the content in different colours depending on what the code does. And you also have many ways to search for words and line numbers to help finding the code you are looking for. You can also split the window in two to display two parts of the same document or to compare two different documents side by side. You can also preview HTML-files directly in Smultron and save snippets of text and insert them simply with a shortcut. And if you don?t want to be disturbed by other applications or the desktop you can let Smultron cover the whole screen to let you concentrate on your work. For the more advanced users Smultron can find all those system files that are normally hidden and it has authenticated open and saves for them. Smultron can also use regular expressions and it can run commands and scripts.

TEA is depended on Qt 4.4 (or higher) and, optionally, on Aspell. TTEA-GTK has more features and depends on GTK+ 2.4 and GtkSourceView 2. Qt-branch is less mature, but in a more active development.

TextWrangler is the powerful general purpose text editor, and Unix and server administrator?s tool. TextWrangler is considerably more modern and capable than BBEdit Lite. Among other things, it can open files from (and save them) to remote FTP and SFTP servers, offers a significantly more powerful grep engine, supports multi-byte and non-Roman text files, can perform Find Differences on pairs of files or folders, and can be invoked from the Unix command line.

Yudit is a free Unicode plain-text editor for Unix-like systems. It is primarily targeted for Linux, but a version is also provided for Windows and MacOS-X. It was developed in the early days of Unicode on Linux, back in 1997. Limitations in development time resulted in being minimal while remaining useful. This editor does not use external libraries, except for the C library and a minimal set of windowing functions. This has helped to make a quick port to platforms where there was no multilingual support. Nowadays, fortunately, Linux has better and better Unicode support, so it might be easy to build an editor on top of Qt or GTK/Pango. Still, you might find Yudit useful if you want to dig deeper into Unicode text. You can also add a new script if you are willing to look at Yudits c++ source code, which, while needing a complete rewrite, has everything in one place.
